What your theatre can do:
- Use digital scripts and scores (Broadway Green Alliance recommends the App https://scriptation.com/)
- Get everyone involved from the start including the production team, designers, actors, stage manager, and house manager.
- Incorporate sustainability into the production concept and think of it not just practically, but artistically. Let your imagination grow wild!
- Provide a QR code for a digital program rather than paper programs, or give audience members the option
- Similar to the Broadway Green Alliance, elect a Green Captain to help with changes you decide to make
- Set your printer to two-sided copies when possible
- Use recycled paper
- Recycle ink cartridges or invest in a cartridge-free printer
- Encourage reusable water bottles, cutlery, straws, plates, and cups.
- Provide water stations if possible or filtered water using a Brita or similar product
- Use LED lights for the backstage area
- Switch off all equipment when not in use
- Install motion sensors in restrooms
- Use paperless ticketing
- Reuse costumes, props, and construction materials whenever possible
- Source costumes, props, and building materials from resources such as thrift stores and Craigslist as well as Facebook Marketplace
- Build set pieces that can be easily reused such as platforms and flats
- Donate any fabric, lumber, costumes, or other supplies that you might otherwise throw away
- Join Facebook groups that share resources for a specific play or musical
- Use rechargeable batteries for microphone packs, small lights, and flashlights
- Recycle materials properly after the show closes
